István Esztány

Expanding bags, 2010

Each expanding bag inspired by the ample skirts of Székler folk attire is unique since users can choose the material and colour combination of the bag and the trimmings. The designer, born in Csíkszereda, Transylvania, drew inspiration from the pleated skirt that opens up and expands during dance, displaying its beauty as it fills the space. In a similar fashion István Esztány’s bags open up at the colourful pleating the rhythm of the stripes change and the rigid parallels are tamed into beautiful pleats. Belt bags, women’s handbags, laptop bags and large travelling bags are included in the collection which won the Hungarian Design Award in 2010 as a design thesis project. Placing emphasis on local values the items of this thoughtfully implemented collection are handmade in a small Transylvanian village utilising local expertise.
